NEAL RANDALL VANSELOW (RANDY)

SUMMERVILLE, SC - Neal Randall Vanselow (Randy) passed away on January 17, 2013 at the age of 60 in Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, SC after a struggle to recover from cardiac arrest.

Born on April 16, 1952 in Syracuse, NY to Dr. C.H. Vanselow and Dawn Randall Vanselow, Randy grew up in central New York, Greenville, PA and Greensboro NC where he attended Grimsley High School. After marriage, Randy moved to Asheville, NC where he spent most of his life. He later lived in Riparius, NY, where he had spend summers during his childhood and retained many close family ties. His final years were spent in Summerville, SC near the beaches he always loved.

A brilliant man, Randy studied electrical engineering and software engineering, graduating with an Associate of Science from Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville, NC. He attended the Universities of NC at Asheville and Charlotte, and later in life obtained a Bachelor of Science from Excelsior College in Computer Information Systems. After holding a variety of jobs as a young man, including owning a private business cutting and delivering firewood to clients in Asheville, Randy found his niche as a senior electrical engineering technician when he worked for many years at Honeywell's Microswitch plant in Mars Hill, NC where he was a popular figure on the factory floor. He later worked for Tribune in Glens Falls, NY.

An outdoor enthusiast, Randy enjoyed a wide variety of activities including hiking, fishing, camping, kayaking, especially along the Edisto River, spelunking, skiing, gardening, and perhaps most of all floating down stretches of the clean upper Hudson River in the Adirondack Mountains. He loved travel and long walks down the beach on Edisto Island. He had a lifelong love of flying, once working on building a kit airplane in his barn and later flying a powered parachute. Randy loved music and enjoyed broading the musical horizons of others. He played the guitar. Randy had a great sense of humor and loved practical jokes. He had recently obtained his amateur radio operators license and enjoyed communicating with others near and far.

Randy is survived by his wife, Barbara Vanselow; his daughter, Jennifer (Jenna) Vanselow; his mother, Dawn Vanselow; and his siblings, Laurie Brainerd, Judy Harry, Ron Vanselow, Danny Vanselow, Kathy Vanselow, Becky Backe, and Katherine Carl.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Asheville, NC at Jubliee Community Church on 46 Wall St. on Saturday Februrary 9th at 2 p.m. Donations in his name may be made to Heifer International.
