JEAN GARVIN HOWENSTINE ATHENS, OHIO - Jean Garvin Howenstine, 48, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at her home, after a four year illness with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, to Athens Friends Meeting, 22 Birge Drive, Chauncey, Ohio.Born Dec. 11, 1950, in Henderson, she was the daughter of Noel and Sarah Garvin of Greensboro. Jean and Charles John Howenstine were married at Highland Lake, NY, on March 24, 1987. They have two children, Kevin and Nathan of the home.

In addition to her parents and immediate family, she is survived by brothers, James Garvin of Fremont, Calif., William Garvin of Maui, Hawaii, and Walter Garvin of Hollywood, Fla.

Jean earned a Bachelors degree in Special Education from Florida State University, after which she worked with the Berkeley, Calif., Christian Coalition for eight years. Upon earning a Masters degree in Recreation from San Francisco State University, she became program director for Pleasant Valley Outdoor Center near Chicago, Ill. and later at Trail Blazer Camp near New York City. Both camps served inner-city youths. She then worked at a Lutheran Church Camp at Highland Lake, NY.

After marriage, Jean and her husband moved to Athens, Ohio, where she was coordinator for the Baker Peace Conference at Ohio University in 1990, and later employed by O'Bleness Memorial Hospital as Housekeeping Supervisor and then as Assistant Director of Volunteer Resources. She also served as Clerk of the Athens Friends Meeting.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Athens Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 17, Athens, Ohio 45701 or to the American Red Cross Blood Program, 100 S. May Avenue, Athens, Ohio 45701.

Jean was a great friend and was the only sister to three brothers. She has a wonderful mother and dad, Sarah and Noel Garvin, who reside in Clemson, NC. She is also survived by two children and a husband. I enjoyed Jean very much in gym class. She was the life of the party.
